Old Bath Road Water Main Extension

Construction Update:

Construction of the Old Bath Road Water Main Extension has begun. Temporary work zone signage and mobile traffic signals were deployed on July 2nd and trenching has begun. Alternating one-way traffic is being utilized. The temporary traffic signals will be used from Monday morning to Friday afternoon. On the weekends, the construction equipment will be removed from the road and the signals will go to flashing yellow. The closure will be about 1,000 ft long and move along with the crew as they install nearly 11,000 ft of new water main. Contractors will ensure access to all properties during the project, though there may be temporary delays during work. For information on connecting to the new water main, please contact the Brunswick-Topsham Water District at (207) 729-9956.

The Town of Brunswick, in partnership with Cumberland County and the Brunswick-Topsham Water District, is seeking to install a water main extension along Old Bath Road and Bay Bridge Road in Brunswick

For the past several years the Town has been working on a project to extend the public water line for approximately 2 miles on Old Bath Road to the Bay Bridge Estates Mobile Home Park, addressing longstanding water supply issues for its residents. The mobile home park is currently served by wells that have been inadequate, as evidenced by the need to truck in water during the winter of 2017-2018. Residents have also reported concerns over water quality.

The Town has been working with Legacy Communities, the owner of Bay Bridge Estates, to negotiate an agreement for Legacy to connect the water system in Bay Bridge Estates to the public water supply at their cost.

The scope of work for this project includes installing 10,200 feet of a 12” water main along Old Bath Road and 600 feet of 8” water main along Bay Bridge Road, a 6” service stub to Bay Bridge Estates, along with associated hydrants, valves, and fittings.

One year following completion of the water main installation, the selected contractor will reclaim and repave Old Bath Road and provide an overlay of Bay Bridge Road. Water main installation and trench repair are to be completed by October 31, 2025. The reclaim and repave of Old Bath Road and overlay of Bay Bridge Road are to be completed by October 31, 2026.

The project is critical for ensuring access to a reliable, clean water supply for over 1,300 residents, while also improving fire protection along the route.  Additional details are available below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the timeline for this project?

A: It is anticipated that installation of the water main will take place during the summer of 2025. The following year, the road will be stripped and repaved. This allows settlement to occur and provides time for interested parties to connect to the water main

Q: What is the process for connecting to the water main?

A: People who are interested in connecting to the new water main may coordinate the connection through the Brunswick-Topsham Water District. Notices will be sent to nearby property owners providing additional details and timelines. Interested parties will need to pay for and schedule their connection to occur in early 2026, prior to the repaving of Old Bath Road. Once the road is paved, a moratorium on cutting into the pavement will be in place for five calendar years. (New connections would be allowed after the moratorium)

Q: How is this project being paid for?

A: The water system extension and road repaving funding sources include a Cumberland County State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funding (SLFRF) grant, a Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) grant, and funds from the Town's Annual Road Reconstruction and Paving Account to serve as the required 20% match for the CDS grant.
