Maine is a closed record State. Individuals requesting a certified copy of a vital record must complete a written request or application, provide acceptable identification, and depending on the record requested, may have to demonstrate their direct and legitimate interest and/or lineage.
By law, Maine birth records less than 75 years old, marriage records less than 50 years old, death records less than 25 years old and fetal deaths less than 50 years old are considered to be private. In order to inspect these documents, or to obtain copies, an individual must prove that they are permitted by law to do so (direct and legitimate interest and/or lineage).
- The person named on the record
- The person's spouse or registered domestic partner
- The parent(s) named on the record
- Descendants of the person named on the record
- The legal guardian of the person named on the record
- The grandparent, sibling, step-parent, step-child, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, mother-in-law, father-in-law of the person named on the record

Brunswick houses birth, marriage, and death records for its residents. If an event, such as a marriage, took place in Brunswick, the records may not be housed in Brunswick but where the couple filed their marriage intentions.
The Town Clerk’s office may charge a $6.00 per record search fee at the discretion of the Town Clerk.
Non-certified copies may be purchased for open records for $6.00 per record and will be labeled “Not for Legal Purposes.”
For certified copies, documentation of direct legitimate interest will need to be provided and will be $15.00 for the first copy, and $6.00 for each additional copy of that record purchased at the same time.
