Aquaculture in Brunswick

Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, shellfish and plants. The term aquaculture refers to the cultivation of both marine and freshwater species and can range from land-based to open-ocean production. Pursuant to Title 12 MRSA 6072 (3) an aquaculture applicant must receive consent of the municipal officers before being granted aquaculture leases inside the towns intertidal zone.

The town's coastal waters have supported various shellfish farms over the past century. From the early days of quahog farming in the 1900s to today’s diverse subtidal and intertidal farms utilizing a range of growing methods, shellfish farming has played a significant role in the local economy. This industry complements Brunswick’s traditional working waterfront identity and fishing heritage while meeting the growing demand for sustainable, traceable, and healthy food sources. Although shellfish farming occupies less than 0.01% of the total shellfishing waters, it accounts for approximately 10% of the total value of all shellfish landed in Brunswick
