Membership

The Brunswick Shellfish Committee is composed of seven members appointed by the Town Council. The membership must include at least two, but no more than three, licensed resident commercial shellfish harvesters. Members serve three-year terms. All committee members are required to adhere to the guidelines established by the Brunswick Town Council as outlined in the committee handbook. A member may be removed and replaced if they accumulate three or more unexcused absences.

Committee Responsibilities

  1. To advise on the shellfish management program. 
  2. To open and close coastal waters for shellfish conservation and sustainability.
  3. To recommend management programs which allow for long-term, sustainable harvest of shellfish. 
  4. To recommend to the Town Council how monies from the shellfish conservation fund should be spent. 
  5. To recommend to the Town Council the amount of shellfish licenses issued annually.  
  6. To review the Maine Department of Marine Resources annual shellfish management plans and reports. 
  7. To cooperate with the Department of Marine Resources and others in carrying on experimental programs. 
  8. To submit an annual report on committee activities and any conservation closures or openings.  
  9. To review, comment and recommend to the Town Council on intertidal aquaculture proposals.

Licensed Commercial Shellfish Harvester Information:

Shellfish Landings (Effective February 15th 2026).

1) Reporting. Commercial harvesters must report annual landings to the Town Clerk by the 15th of February each year to remain eligible for the following years license.

  • a) Harvest reports must be submitted on a paper form or electronic application provided by the Town Clerk and filled out in their entirety.
  • b) Reports must indicate:
    • (2) Species harvested: softshell clams and razor clams must be reported in pounds; Quahogs and Oysters must be reported in pieces.
    • (2) The locations of harvest must be as area-specific as possible, i.e. Maquoit Bay, Middle Bay, Harpswell Cove, Long Reach, Thomas Point Beach, and New Meadows River.
